What do you think bosses and employers crave? I've been watching employees come and go for years, and I have my own ideas. For now, I'd like to know what you think employers desire most in a good employee. Use the Comment Link below, and tell the world what you think. Check back in a few days, and I'll share my own ideas.
I was going to answer this question by trying to pick out the three to five key attributes that great employees all share--things like showing up on time, getting along with other people and such. But the more I thought about the question, the more I realized employers everywhere crave one thing: They crave employees who do more than just punch in and take up space.
You're reading career advice from a cartoonist, so here it is: Do your work with a glad heart, be proud to do it well, do more than show up, complain about the air conditioning and hope you can keep collecting your paycheck. Open your eyes, engage your brain and get involved with your working life!
You could do this because you want the boss to notice and give you a raise or a new position in your company. You could do it just for the feeling of pride in a job well done. You might do more than fill up space because you want to take what you learn at your current job and move on to something bigger and better. You may do your work with joy because it provides you with the resources to pursue your dream of something completely new and different.
The point is to go to work and do more than fill time. Be grateful you are able to work. When you embrace your life and fill it with joy and passion, people will notice, and your life will be much richer.
